HSE is Double Champion in Ultimate Frisbee
In February 2013, the annual Russian indoor student championship in ultimate Frisbee, Flying Spin, took place in Nizhny Novgorod. The HSE team won the championship.
Ultimate Frisbee is a team game with a flying disc that appeared in the USA in 1960s. The game is played by two teams on a rectangular pitch with zones at each end. The aim is to get the disc to a player from your team in the opponents’ zone. The first players of ultimate frisbee were students from Columbia High School who used to play with the plastic dishes from cherry pies – the ancestor of the modern frisbee.
This is the sixth annual Flying Spin championship in Russia and has become the main student tournament in ‘Ultimate’ in the country. For the second year running, the HSE team tasted victory: they beat the team from Lobachevsky State University in Nizhny Novgorod by 12-9. A year ago these two teams met in the semi-final, where the HSE made a fantastic comeback passing 4 frisbees right at the end of the game, to win 8-7.
Now the cup will spend at least a year at the HSE, and the team’s goal is now to defend their title in 2014. In addition to this, they are planning to repeat last year’s success in the largest student championship on grass, the Constructors’ Cup, which will take place in Moscow at the end of April, and of course, to take part in some international competitions.
The HSE’s women’s team also participated in the competition and won the award for ‘Spirit of the Games’, which they also won last year. The HSE women’s team was the only all-female team in the championship, and finished in 8th position.
