HSE Enters THE Subject Rankings in Physical Sciences for First Time
For the first time ever, the Higher School of Economics has entered the Times Higher Education ranking in the physical sciences, placing in the 401-500 group. The results of the ranking were announced at a Project 5-100 conference seminar by Phil Baty, chief editor of the THE World University Rankings.
The ranking covers universities’ achievements in mathematics, physics, chemistry and geology.
‘HSE’s entry into the THE ranking in physical sciences is undoubtedly an achievement for the university insofar as the subjects being evaluated were only launched at HSE rather recently’, said Irina Karelina, Director of Strategic Planning. ‘The Faculty of Mathematics was opened in 2007, and the Faculty of Physics began accepting students in 2017. HSE’s entry into the ranking is the logical continuation of the physical and mathematics orientation in the Faculties of Mathematics, Computer Science and the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM HSE). Publications in physics already account for approximately one third of the total assessed volume of HSE publications in this ranking. Right now, we have a great head start for future advancement in these subject areas where HSE previously didn’t enjoy a presence’.
Alongside HSE, nine Russian universities also made the ranking; seven of these represent the Project 5-100.
The methodology in the subject area rankings is based on the same 13 indicators as the institutional rating, which are also consolidated into five categories. The weight of the indicators varies depending on the subject area.
In 2017, the range of the ranking in physical sciences was expanded to the Top 500 universities; prior to this, only the Top 100 universities were recognized. Earlier this year, the Higher School of Economics entered the THE subject rankings in Business & Economics (101-125 group), Social Sciences (176-200 group), and Art & Humanities (176-200 group).
