‘Getting a PhD Is Just the Beginning’

In autumn 2024, Yea Rem Choi, from South Korea, Junior Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-scale Analysis and assistant at the HSE MIEM School of Applied Mathematics, defended his doctoral dissertation on applied mathematics at HSE University. Yea Rem Choi talked to the HSE News Service about the soft skills that helped him in his research, how he is building a career, and why he chose HSE University for his doctoral studies.

Winners of the Yandex and HSE Olympiad Develop an AI Model to Assess Vehicle Condition

Yandex Education and the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have concluded the first joint Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis Olympiad (AIDAO). The winning team, AI Capybara from ITMO University, developed an AI model that detects defects in vehicle exteriors and interiors. The challenge for the competition was devised by the Yandex Taxi machine learning team, who will evaluate the feasibility of implementing the AI model in practice.

Math AI Tutor Named Education Innovation of the Year

On November 23, 2024, the final round of the Innovations in Education Contest took place, marking the 11th season of the initiative that unites innovators in education. The competition is organised by HSE University and Alfa-Bank. This year’s event was the largest in its history, with over 1,000 applications from more than 3,000 participants across all federal districts of Russia. The final showcased 12 innovative projects, with winners receiving awards, including the grand prize of 1 million roubles.

On November 11, 2024, the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences hosted a celebration for Economist Day. Many of the university's partners came to congratulate HSE on the occasion. The atrium on Pokrovsky Bulvar hosted booths from VkusVill, Ozon, HeadHunter, Wildberries, and other leading companies. Students and professors participated in quizzes, spun the wheel of fortune, painted, and crafted.

Alexandra Kislyonkova, 27, originally from Kazakhstan, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Informatics from HSE University in St Petersburg. After completing her bachelor's, Alexandra pursued a master’s in the 'Science of Learning and Assessment' programme at HSE University in Moscow. Alexandra is currently a PhD student in the Quantitative Methods, Measurement, and Statistics programme at the University of California, Merced, where she also holds a teaching position in the Psychology programme. We asked Alexandra about her studies at HSE University, her scientific interests, the subject of her dissertation, and... how to marry an HSE University student!

Every semester, 21 countries and 52 universities open their doors to students from HSE University as part of the student international mobility programme. In the fall semester of 2024, Sofya Malyukova, a third-year student of the bachelor's programme ‘Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication’ at the HSE School of Foreign Languages, went to study at Ca' Foscari University (Venice, Italy) through the student mobility programme.

HSE Team Takes First Place in RuCode Algorithmic Programming Championship

On October 20, 2024, the final round of the RuCode Algorithmic Programming Championship took place, setting a new record in the Russian Book of Records as the ‘Largest Competitive Programming Event.’ The event, held simultaneously across 24 locations, hosted 1,450 participants divided into 500 teams. The overall winner of the senior team division was the M.O.S.C.O.W. team from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS).

Growing Interest among Foreign Citizens in Studying at HSE University: Results of 2024/25 Admissions and Launch of New Campaign

The steadily growing interest in studying at HSE University, particularly among applicants from CIS and Asian countries, reflects the high quality of Russian education. This year, as part of a separate admissions process for international applicants, 2,267 students were enrolled across all HSE University's campuses for the 2024/25 academic year, representing a 14% increase compared to last year.
