Education news at HSE University

From February 14–18, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science organised its first international winter school dedicated to software engineering. The event was supported by JetBrains, Innopolis University, and Schaffhausen Institute of Technology.

In August 2018, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science launched a Joint Department with SAS, a world leader in analytics software. The Department’s objective is to provide better training for future data experts. The HSE News Service reports on the ideas that have come to fruition and how academic teaching is combined with hands-on training there.

Andrei Lukyanov enrolled in ICEF Master of Financial Economics programme in 2019. In his second year, Andrei went to LUISS University in Rome as a double degree student. Currently a financial analyst at TAU Group, the Italian-Russian engineering startup, Andrei speaks on how to prepare for the career as a quant, the opportunities that come with studying abroad, and what duties the financial experts have in e-mobility.

HSE University has placed 66th in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022, which assess universities younger than 50 years old. The THE Young University Ranking is the first in a series of global rankings to be published in 2022.

A team of HSE students is taking part in the development of a Russian satellite automatic identification system (AIS) to monitor sea navigation. The aim of the project is to track the locations of vessels and adjust their routes, including in the Arctic along the Northern Sea Route.

In February and March, a specially commissioned series of open talks by professors from Goldsmiths, University of London, will be held online. Professor Anna Furse, Co-Director of the HSE PeARL Performance Research Lab, will be hosting the lectures. In the first session (on February 3), Professor Atau Tanaka will speak about embodied musical interactions.

HSE University alumna Dr. Elena Podkolzina recently became an academic supervisor of the newly established master's programme in Economics and Economic Policy. Having been part of HSE University for nearly 25 years now, Dr. Podkolzina recalls her student years and shares her experience as deputy director of the Center for Institutional Studies.

Alla Fridman has been teaching at ICEF since 2001, working with the programme’s first graduating class. She witnessed the evolution of ICEF and played an active role in its development. In this interview, Ms. Fridman describes how Russian universities survived the economic reforms of the 1990s, why students either love or hate their teachers and how the university can help your personal life.
