Eight HSE Faculty Members Elected Full and Corresponding Members to the Russian Academy of Sciences
After holding elections at a general meeting on November 14-15, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) has announced its new full and corresponding members. Among those announced, eight new appointees are HSE faculty members.
Arutyun Avetisyan, Head of HSE University’s Joint Department with the RAS Institute for System Programming and Professor of the Faculty of Computer Science, was elected Full Member of the RAS Department of Mathematical Sciences. Professor Avetisyan has been working at the Institute for System Programming for more than twenty years since coming there as a postgraduate student, and he has served as the Institute’s director since 2015. In 2016, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and in 2017, he joined the Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) at HSE. Professor Avetisyan is currently teaching a master’s programme course on parallel programming at the FCS.
Another newly elected Full Member to the RAS Department of Mathematical Sciences is HSE Professor Lev Beklemishev of HSE’s Joint Department with the Steklov Institute of Mathematics (RAS), which is based in the Faculty of Mathematics. Since completing his doctoral studies at the Institute, Professor Beklemishev has been working as a researcher there for almost 30 years. For 7 years, he taught in Western Europe at various universities, and he has been teaching at HSE University since 2011. Currently, he teaches undergraduate courses in the Faculty of Mathematics. His courses include a research seminar, as well as a university-wide minor course. Professor Beklemishev’s primary research interests are mathematical logic, theory of evidence, and formal arithmetic.
HSE Professor Valery Krukov of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs was elected a Full Member to the RAS Department of Social Sciences. Professor Krukov also currently heads the Institute of Economics and the RAS’s Siberian Branch of Industrial Engineering. Professor Krukov has been a professor at HSE since 2007. He was elected as an RAS Corresponding Member in 2011. Professor Krukov is one of the leading experts in Russia on raw materials and energy markets. Over the years he has taught courses and research seminars in these areas at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University.
In addition, five HSE faculty members are now newly elected Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Marina Butovskaya, Professor of the School of History and Senior Research Fellow of HSE’s International Centre of Anthropology, was elected as a Corresponding Member to the RAS Department of History and Philology. Professor Butovskaya’s areas of expertise include anthropology, ethnology, and the evolution human behaviour. She heads the Sector of Cross-Cultural Psychology and Human Ethology at the RAS Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology. She has been working at HSE since 2014.
Two HSE faculty members were elected Corresponding Members to the RAS Department of Global Affairs and International Relations: Oksana Gaman-Golutvina, Research Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences; and Viktor Supyan, Professor at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs. Professor Gaman-Golutvina, one of Russia’s leading political researchers, heads the Russian Association of Political Science and teaches a university-wide minor course on contemporary political affairs. Professor Supyan is Deputy Director of the RAS Institute for the USA and Canadian Studies and is one of Russia’s premier experts in US economics and Russian-American economic relations. At HSE, he teaches a course on North American economics and politics.
Senior Researcher Yuri Prokhorov of HSE’s Laboratory of Algebraic Geometry and its Applications was elected Corresponding Member to the RAS Department of Mathematical Sciences. Professor Prokhorov has been an HSE faculty member since 2010. His research focuses on mathematical subfields such as birational geometry, classification of algebraic varieties, Mori theory, and invariant theory.
Alexander Smirnov, Professor of HSE’s Joint Department of Low Temperature Physics with the Kapitza Institute for Physical Problems (RAS) and Chief Research Fellow of HSE’s Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics, was elected Corresponding Member to the RAS Department of Physical Sciences. Professor Smirnov’s current research focuses on spin dynamics, and he is teaching a course on low-temperature magnetism in the Faculty of Physics.
