Animated Films by HSE Students to Be Shown on ‘Culture’ Channel
On the 250th anniversary of the birth of Russian writer Ivan Krylov, third-year students of the programme ‘Animation and illustration’ (supervised by Elena Kitaeva) of HSE School of Art and Design revamped and gave new meanings and forms to the works of the writer. They prepared 10 short animated films based on his fables that will be aired on the TV channel ‘Culture’ (‘Kultura’) throughout the week.

HSE Student Awarded Russia’s Prize ‘For Loyalty to Science’ for Best Radio Programme
Vera Gribanova, a graduate student in the Master’s Programme 'Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation' runs a radio programme about great scientific achievements called ‘Scientific Light’ on the radio station ‘Moscow Talks’ (Govorit Moskva). This year her radio show has received the prestigious prize ‘For Loyalty to Science’, which is awarded annually by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Second Joint Olympiad in Statistical Learning Theory
Faculty of Computer Science of HSE and Skoltech are pleased to announce the launch of the second joint Olympiad in Statistical Learning Theory (SLT). The competition will be open to students specializing in the fields related to Applied Mathematics and Informatics. Following a pre-selection phase (application details below), the Olympiad final will be held at Skoltech on April 6-7, 2019.

Research plays a growing role in the educational process of the country’s leading universities. The HSE Statement of Values, for example, underscores its importance, stating: ‘Our lectures and textbooks reflect cutting-edge academic research; our academic articles, student papers, models and experiments seek to expand the horizons of contemporary academic inquiry.’ In honor of Students’ Day, we present a selection of facts about the connection between study and science in Russian universities, and specifically at HSE. How Students Spent the Longest Night of the Year
On December 21, HSE students organized an Art & Science space called ‘NOCH’ (‘NIGHT’) on the site of the SAMSKARA exhibition at the ArtPlay Design Center in Moscow. Over the course of the seven-hour event, participants discussed the search for extraterrestrial civilizations, the significance of gender differences in post-industrial society, the use of modern technologies to meld art and science, and other exciting topics.

On December 13, Russia’s first ever Arabic Language Competition took place in Moscow with the support of the Qatar Embassy. Three students – two from HSE and one from MGIMO – won one-year scholarships at Qatar University for next year.

Student Projects Collect 5,069 HSEcoins Before Taking a Break
At the beginning of the new academic year, HSE launched a new mechanism to support student projects called HSEcoin. The first phase of fundraising through this platform took place from September 13 to November 20. During this time, student projects managed to collect 5,069.14 HSEcoins, which equals more than one million roubles based on 2018 exchange rates.
