Relationship between different types of identity and acculturation attitudes

On September 21 Vardikian S. took part in the "Culture matters" research seminar with the report on "Relationship between different types of identity and acculturation attitudes".

In the report, the results of a study aimed at revealing the role of different types of identity (ethnic, civil and identity with the place) in the choice of acculturation strategies was examined. In order to find out how these types of identity are related to the process of acculturation, a study was conducted in which Russians (n = 110) and Armenians (n ​= 137), residing in Russia, took part.

To assess of place identity, the measure by Droseltis and Vignoles was used, which adapted by the author for the Russian-language sample. The results showed that in the process of choosing the acculturation strategy for immigrants, along with social identities, identity plays a significant role in a place that we understand as a component of a person's personal identity. The host population does not have a connection between the place identity and acculturation attitudes.

The results of the study suggest that place identity is a factor that may be taken into account in acculturation studies.
