Evgenii Krouk, Acting Director and Academic Supervisor of HSE MIEM

Professor Krouk is a renowned scholar from St. Petersburg, an expert in information systems and technologies, cryptography, and data transfer. Until recently, he was Vice Rector for Research and Director at an institute at the St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation.

Evgenii Krouk’s professional development has been mostly related to the State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. There he studied, taught, and created a department that eventually grew into a faculty, and then into the Institute of Information Systems and Data Protection. He also taught at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and at the St. Petersburg State University department of mathematics and mechanics. In 1990s, he was invited professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands), Lund University (Sweden), Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), and the University of Ulm (Germany). His books have been published in English by Wiley publishers.

The list of scholarly areas taught at MIEM is fully in line with Evgenii Krouk’s research interests. Today, they are focused on wireless communication and cryptography. MIEM Acting Director has received an award in education from the St. Petersburg Government. He also holds several professional awards, including from the Russian Association of Cosmonautics, and is an Honorary Employee of Higher Educational Institutions of the Russian Federation and Distinguished Russian Scholar.

Evgenii Krouk believes that an engineering education must now respond to the fourth industrial revolution by providing students with new competencies. A contemporary engineer cannot be an expert in a narrow field, they must be able to organize production, and therefore need to be aware of dozens of different kinds of technologies and understand the mechanisms of their interaction. MIEM offers a wide range of programmes, and its graduates are in demand on the labor market; but the range of master’s programmes can still be expanded, and their launch and development will be the key priority, the Acting Director says.
