From September 15 – 21, Moscow will host the very first International Economics Olympiad for high school students. Students from 15 countries who have won national competitions in economics and finance will take part in the event. Russian high school students have the opportunity to compete online.
International high school Olympiads are annual competitions designed for high school students from all over the world. The most prestigious competitions are in mathematics (since 1959), physics (since 1967), and chemistry (since 1968).
In 2018, the first Olympiad in economics will be held and Russia has been named the official host. The event was initiated by the Higher School of Economics and is supported by the Sberbank Charity Fund ‘Contribution to the Future’ and the New Economic School.
The Olympiad will kick off on September 15 at Sberbank Corporate University. Teams from 15 countries (5 contestants each), including Austria, Brazil, Ireland, Latvia, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and USA, will compete. All of them are national competition winners.
The contest is made up of three rounds. The students will solve problems in math and economics and applied cases in finance and business, and will also write essays. According to Danil Fedorovykh, Head of the Olympiad Executive Board, the tasks are designed not to test the participants’ ‘drilled’ knowledge, but to measure their ability to solve complex tasks and to understand how the contemporary economy works.
The results of the Olympiad will be announced both for individuals and teams. The jury includes representatives from Russia, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, and Portugal. The Olympiad Board of Trustees is chaired by Eric Maskin, Harvard Professor and winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in economics, who will take part in the opening ceremony and deliver a lecture for the contestants.
Participants in the opening ceremony also include Azer Talybov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia, Bella Zlatkis, Deputy Chairperson of the Executive Board of Sberbank, Yaroslav Kuzminov, HSE Rector, and Ruben Enikopolov, NES Rector.
The first round of the Olympiad will be an online game in economics. Any school student in Russia participate and test their knowledge in finance. They are also in the running to win valuable prizes, donated by the sponsors.
To take part, please visit finance.ecolymp.org and register. The recommended age for participation is 12 to 18. The competition will run from September 15 to October 15, 2018. Participation in such an event is an excellent motivation for students to improve their financial literacy.
