‘Moving From Being a Consumer of Ideas to a Producer of Research’
For over a year now John Nye, professor of George Mason University (USA), has been heading the HSE International Laboratory of Institutional Analysis of Economic Reforms. During his most recent visit to Moscow, Professor Nye told the HSE reporter about how the laboratory’s work is organized and what staff it needs, as well as about its research and new courses, some of which will be launched in May.
AHELO: In Order to Be Precise in Evaluations
From November 23rd – 29th 2011, a training programme for national managers on the Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO) project took place at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) headquarters in Paris. On October 28th 2011, a session of the Academic Council of the Higher School of Economics took place at the HSE, The event began with an award ceremony: Claude Blanchemaison, Professor at the Paris-Dauphine University, former French Ambassador in Russia and a long-time friend of the HSE, was given the title of HSE Honorary Professor.

Ronald Inglehart, Academic Supervisor of the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research at the HSE Branch in Saint-Petersburg, has been acknowledged by the experts of ‘Russian Reporter’ magazine as one of the 100 the most authoritative people in Russia in 2011 – in the category ‘Scientists’, ‘for his willingness to become a Russian scientist’.
The Road to Academic Excellence
The World Bank in Washington has launched a new book, ‘The Road to Academic Excellence’, which presents eleven case studies of young research universities from all over the world. The only Russian example included in the book is the Higher School of Economics.

Boris Saltykov, Head of the HSE Department of Science and Innovation Management, has been awarded the title of docteur honoris causa at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon (France).

On October 5th, high level HSE management and leading faculty members had a meeting with Panos Pardalos, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, USA, to discuss plans and future opportunities for a new Laboratory at the HSE branch in Nizhny Novgorod. The Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies of Network Structures will be established through a grant from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
